The Perth Royal Show conjures up images of fairground rides, glossy animals paraded, families enjoying a day out, showbags, candyfloss, hot dogs and a whole lotta fun. You may not realise that along with all of this, the team behind the Perth Royal Show also have a very difficult task of judging entries for the Perth Royal Food Awards.
The Royal Agricultural Society of WA (RASWA) has been around since 1831, and first hosted what is now known as the Perth Royal Show back in 1834. RASWA has been continuously improving the Perth Royal show & brand since then, and this year is no exception. As part of the show there are several competitions under many categories, including Animals/Agriculture (Cattle, Sheep, Horses etc), Skill (Wood Chopping, Shearing, Art etc) & of course Food. RASWA wants to show everyone how great their award winners are, and have now re-branded the Perth Royal Food Awards to make it easier for people in WA to enjoy and identify incredible local award winning products.
Hungry Husband and I were lucky enough to be invited along to the Perth Royal Food Awards new brand launch last week. After talking to those behind the scenes, you can see the passion that they all have for quality WA products & they want to help us choose and support local producers too. We spoke to several members of the team, and all of them were so enthusiastic about the re-brand, and sharing award winning food & beverages with us!
We were greeted with a glass of award winning Swings & Roundabouts NV Sparkling Pinot Noir/Chardonnay. There were Espresso Martinis on offer also, combining 3 WA products – Chocolate, Coffee & Gin. At one end of the room we could see previous award winners in the Beer & Wine categories (including Feral Brewing, Mandoon Estate, Heydon Estate), and down the other end a magnificent display of current food award winners, which looked all far too good to eat! After taking lots of photos, and admiring the stunning layout created by Table & Plate, we dug in and enjoyed offerings from Fremantle Chocolate, Margaret River Dairy Company, Ha Ve Harvey Cheese, Bittersweet Bakes, Mt Claremont Village Bakery, The Sassy Cookie, Bakers Delight Swan View, and more. Its not hard to choose these products when they are just SO good!
Perth Royal Food Award competition categories include:
Coffee (coming next year)
